Ian Hutchison was born in Loveland, Colorado, and grew up in Colorado Springs. Aside from his skills on electric and upright bass, he is also proficient on piano, guitar, drum set, percussion, and tuba. Ian has studied with local jazz legend Ken Walker and Colorado Symphony Orchestra's John Arneson.
Ian has performed with several notable jazz artists including Javon Jackson, Steve Barta, David Amram, and Darrell Grant. No stranger to bluegrass, Ian has also performed with Andy Stein, the fiddler from NPR’s A Prairie Home Companion. Ian is well versed in all major musical styles, including rock, salsa, country, funk, jazz, Brazilian, bluegrass, and classical.
He graduated magna cum laude from the University of Denver’s Lamont School of Music with a bachelor’s degree in jazz performance. He won several distinctions, including jazz student of the year and outstanding senior jazz recital. Ian was also awarded a two week trip to study at Lamont’s sister university in Nagoya, Japan.
His busy performance schedule brings him to the most popular jazz venues in the Rocky Mountain region. He hosts the Dazzle jam session every Tuesday and currently plays in The Taffetas at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts. He recently returned from a tour of Argentina with the Denver Young Artist’s Orchestra.
